EK BALAM

Ek Balam is located in the Yucatán Peninsula, about 44 miles Northeast of Chichen Itza. It’s an important area full of interesting glyphic corpus and carved stones. We get to see an impressive Acropolis building (660 feet long, 110 feet high and 160 feet width) with a complex and fascinating architecture which has been revealed as Ek’ Balam’s Royal Palace during the Terminal Classic Period. Up until now, only half the extension of this building has been explored. Ek Balam is consider one of the most important arqueological zones of the Yucatan peninsula because is so different of all the others from the Mayan world. Characteristics like its double wall, stelas, and the Acropolis of course give importance to the place. It would not be extremely risky to venture that in the following years the number of hieroglyphic texts found in Ek’ Balam may well duplicate. Ek Balam has come to fill, at last, a geographic and chronological void in the septentrional central region of the Yucatán peninsula.

RIO LAGARTOS AND EK BALAM RUINS ECOLOGICAL TOUR

This is a longer but worth it-to-do activity. First, we go to Rio Lagartos, a unique wet zone 40 miles long and as a river but with very salt water. At the small wood bridge the boats (one every 6 people) are waiting for us; the skippers are ecological guides and the fotosafari is unforgetable: white and grey pelicans, hawks, fishing eagles, white and pink (spoonbills) ibis, blue, green, white, tiger, herons and egrets, cormorants, american and moreleti crocodiles (on and off), pink salt lakes and… the flamingos, the stars of the show!
At the end of the boat trip we go to a seafood restaurant: sea bass, sea trout fillets, grouper and shrimps. All served with white wine, beer (1) or soft drinks (1) (included in the tour). Coffee and liquors not included.
On our way back we stop by Ek Balam (in mayan means “the Black Jaguar”).
Our last stop is Hunuku, a little mayan community that gives you the opportunity to share the true native life.

Tour includes:

  • Transportation
  • Tour conductor
  • Biosphere and ruin fees
  • Guide in Ek Balam
