TULUM
From all Mesoamerican prehispanic cities,
Tulum is the only one built on the cast and the only walled
one; it was the first Mayan city Spaniards declare to have
seen in the 16 th century and, as a paradox, the last Mayan
fortress in the conquest process.
In its splendor years it was an important
pilgrimage center, hundreds of boats departed from Tulum to
Cozumel island, which was consecrated to Ixchel, fertility
Mayan goddess. Every Mayan girl had to go to there at least
once in their lives. It was also an important theocratic political
and commercial center. The main structure is El Castillo that
once was a lighthouse to guide the boats through the treacherous
reefs. Because of all this or simply because of its awe-inspiring
image, Tulum is now the most visited archaeological site in
Mexico and fundamental part of Riviera Maya sightseeing.
